I,ve had this film in my VHS collection for years and enjoyed it. This is the precursor film to SYNGENOR. I thought that maybe with the advent of DVD I would get a clearer, crisper, cleaner image... I was wrong. The transfer quality is really bad.It is unbeleavably grainy, gritty, and dark. My God is it dark!! You can,t see any night scenes and even the day scenes are poor.Don,t waste your money.

In this exclusive, live concert DVD, recorded in Switzerland, the Gil Evans Orchestra features Jazz heavyweights the Brecker Bothers, Billy Cobham, Mike Manieri, & Lew Soloff playing original compositions from Evans himself, as well as from Charles Mingus, George Gershwin, Jimi Hendrix, and Thelonious Monk. Digitally Re-Mastered and featuring multiple Bonus Features, on this DVD Gil Evans' trademark leadership of this star-studded big band results in a performance of rare quality and special historical interest.Gil Evans is one of the most notable Jazz arrangers and composers of the 20th century. Whether conducting for Miles Davis (musicians who've played for Evans are the Who's Who of Jazz history: Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Wayne Shorter and on and on), or piling up Grammy nominations, honorary degrees and the praise of music journalists around the globe, Jazz-innovator Gil Evans' name is synonymous with musical excellence.Gil Evans innovative musical explorations opened new horizons for Big Band Jazz. He started his own band in his early twenties and orchestrated the exciting new sound of the Claude Thornhill Orchestra in the 1940s. He also worked on Bob Hope's radio show, and wrote arrangements for singers Pearl Bailey, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, and Peggy Lee among others. His unique arranging style and use of instruments rarely heard in Jazz, like the French horn and tuba, were key elements in creating the landmark album Birth of Cool with Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, and John Lewis. Parasomnia (2008) Review

It's about time someone decided to release this film. I've been watching scenes and outtakes and previews from this film and was hoping someone would have enough sense to release this nightmare motion picture. From the weird visuals and creations to the love story between the girl with Parasomnia(Cherilyn Wilson) and the art student (Dylan Purcell) who falls for her and finds himself in a battle for the young lady by uber villain (Patrick Kilpatrick)who has been locked in the room next to hers. Bound with chains and shackles, he is known as, "the doctors say, "The only man they've ever met without a soul" Mr. Kilpatrick causes others to kill themselves with just a suggestion.A lot of this film is spent in Cherilyn's dream world as the hero and villian fight for her soul.
This is one of Bill Malone's best films and the visuals are very creepy. This should end up being one of those horror movies that people will add to their 'lists' of favorite nightmares. Like I said, it's about time someone wised up and is releasing this film. Even if it's going straight to DVD. It would be a wonderful film to see in the theatre on the large screen though..
Hopefully, we won't have to wait this long for Mr. Malone's next film to find a a distributor.

This is an incredible bargain. I always said that if Air Time came out on DVD, I would get it, but boy did they outdo themselves!! All these pieces show why Jordan is not just the greatest baller on earth, but also why he is an incredible individual in every aspect of life. The Slayers - The Complete First Season Review

The Slayers - The Complete First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Slayers" is one of my all-time favorite animated series and the best of the sizeable anime fantasy/comedy genre. It's packed with action, adventure, bizarre characters, magic, monsters, and all the goofy humor one could ever want. Lina Inverse is the ultimate anime anti-heroine: a greedy, bad-tempered yet adorable genius sorceress who has made a career out of stealing from bandits.
The series' opening salvo is an absolute classic and will tell you right away whether or not this show is for you. The first episode has Lina-chan up to her usual business when she meets up with a dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers swordsman named Gourry. The two wind up "saving" a village from a dragon (if blowing half of the town apart can qualify as saving it) who insults our heroine and new companion by stepping over them "like two pieces of..." rather than squashing them. As many Slayers adventures do, the episode ends with Lina being run out of town by angry villagers. Is it really poor Lina-chan's fault that her spells are a bit overpowered and discretion is not in her vocabulary? Okay yes, but you've gotta love her anyways. One of my favorite episodes of any television show ever.
"Slayers" is a show with several arcs in a given season. The pacing is usual spot-on with each story building up to a climax, but not taking too long to do so. A few comedic standalone episodes are thrown in and then the next story begins. After some misunderstandings Lina finds herself tutoring a good-two-shoes princess, Amelia, who wishes to use Lina's ultimate technique, the atom-bombish Dragon Slave, to enforce her kooky idea of justice. Amelia's bizzare behavior proves to be a comedic centerpiece of the series and her magical abilites come in handy as well. The primary cast is completed once the first villain, Zelgadis, enters the fray. Zel is a chimera with rock hard skin, wicked combat skills both magical and as a swordsman, and a big chip on his shoulder. He's also a fan favorite. The supporting cast is also strong, but work best in small doses. White magician Sylphiel proves to be one of the series' stronger characters and her interest in Gourry and soft-spoken demeanor make her an interesting fit with Lina's rowdy band of stooges.
As Lina and her band move further and further up the villain ladder, the series really begins to excel at combining it's elements. The show can switch effortlessly from slapstick comedy to serious plot-driven drama and back again without the two detracting from one another. Can you feel the tension in the epic confrontations aganst impossible odds as Lina pushes herself to the limit for the sake of all humanity? Yes. Will you still laugh yourself silly at the chicken-toting henchman dressed up as Col. Sanders luring our starving heroes into a trap using 11 herbs and spices? God, yes. Are Gourry's overly dramatic cries of "SYLPHIEEEEELLLL!!!!" both ridiculous and somehow touching? Mmm hmmm.
I can honestly say there is nothing else quite like this show. It knows it's niche and it rarely stretches beyond it's comfort zone, relying on recurring gags and goofy character-driven humor along with epic confrontations and storylines that should keep fantasy fans interested throughout. The English dub has a lot of personality and jokes added into it and, as expected, the Japanese language track is a hoot as well. There are two more 5-star seasons of this wonderful television series available ("Slayers Next" and "Slayers Try") as well as a feature film and several OVA's which chronicle Lina's days before meeting Gourry. Those are fun as well and feature better quality animation, but the three seasons of the television series are the absolute must-owns. Personally, I own all of the original, pricier "Slayers" releases and THAT, my friends, is a whole lot of my time and money I've spent on this series. These new releases are remastered, the price is magnificent, the show is awesome, I love it. Fantasy fans must not go without; buy it.

Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut (2001)

First I would like to say that this review is more targeted at the Blu-Ray transfer of this movie. When I first found out this movie was available on Blu-Ray I had to have it since it's one of my favorite movies. I already owned the DVD, and was happy with the quality of the video on my up-converting DVD player. I figured the Blu-Ray would have to look better since it advertised as HD 1080p. Unfortunately that was not the case; in fact the DVD looks better up-converted than the Blu-Ray does. How does that happen? It appears the studio did very little to prepare this film for Blu-Ray. If anything they made it worse by trying to doctor it up rather than spend the money to re-master it properly. The movie has a lot of dark scenes which are almost all grainy and not very detailed. The light scenes are not as noticeable but you can still see it unless you're sitting a good distance from your TV. I guess the point I'm trying to make would be to hang on to your DVD until they fix the Blu-Ray transfer. At the new price it's worth buying if you don't already have the DVD, but don't "up grade" to this from your DVD.

I bought the DVD, understanding it wasnt a documentary, or even a story really related to the actual Lizzie Borden murder mystery, etc. I did expect however, some kind of a decent film, with good acting, a storyline, plot, all those kinds of things that go into a good tale. None of those things will be found in here. The acting is atrocious, the storyline?? ..there isn't one. The special effects are pathetic, and asinine. The whole mess is just a disgrace. I cannot believe I spent money to buy this. Im ashamed. This is one of the worst pieces of drivel, trash I even say, that I have ever been unfortunate enough to watch. Its not even bad enough to call camp, B flick, cheeseball, or any other kind of film that maybe everyone might not like. This is THAT BAD!!! dont even waste your money renting it. Apt Pupil (1998) Review

Apt Pupil (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie quickly disappeared from the theaters, which is really too bad, because it's an excellent film. Those reviewers who disliked it because it didn't have enough "Stephen King" have missed the point. Good horror doesn't always depend on lots of supernatural gore. Sometimes the most frightening things are the terrible possibilities we find within ourselves -- if we dare to look. Much of this film consists of psychological games, but that doesn't make it any less terrifying. If you have ever wondered how ordinary good citizens (like yourself???) could have ended up serving the Nazi genocide machine, then this movie is a chillingly real answer. An excellent study in how seemingly moral people can be manipulated by fear and seduced by power.
What starts out as an honor student's curiousity about a dark chapter in history soon degenerates into cruelty and manipulation on both sides. The student begins by blackmailing an old Nazi war criminal into telling him all about the concentration camps -- and that means EVERYTHING -- or else he will turn him over to the authorities. The old Nazi, fearing arrest, complies. But the boy soon goes beyond curiousity, as he begins to enjoy having absolute power over another human being. At this point, the student is the sadist, and I actually found myself feeling sorry for the old man. But wait -- the Nazi still has a few tricks up his sleeve, and the tables are soon turned... To tell you more would be a spoiler. Just remember: when you dine with the devil, the spoon is never long enough.

Dreamscape (Special Edition) (1984) Review

Dreamscape (Special Edition) (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do you ever remember your dreams? I rarely do...unless they are of the really intense kind and I wake up during the dream, and even then the images tend to slip from my conscious like grains of sand through your hand. Why am I bothering telling you this? Well, I needed some kind of opener for my review of Dreamscape (1984), a film that deals with dreams and such, and this was the best I could come up with at the time, lame as it may be...directed by Joseph Ruben, who later did Sleeping with the Enemy (1991) and Money Train (1995), Dreamscape presents quite a cast with Dennis Quaid, Max Von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, Kate Capshaw, Eddie Albert, and even George Wendt (Norm!).
Dennis Quaid plays Alex Gardner, a young man of fantastic psychic abilities who has since dropped off the radar, preferring to use his `gifts' to manipulate women and pick winners at the horse track, rather than continuing to subject himself to an endless series of tests meant to study and learn of his abilities, tests conducted by Doctor Paul Novotny (Von Sydow). Seemingly content to squander his skills, Alex's path once again leads him back to Dr. Novotny and his assistant, Jane DeVries (Capshaw) as they've developed a machine that would allow someone with Alex's talents to enter the dreams of others, and possibly help those plagued with reoccurring nightmares, specifically in the President (Albert) who is suffering from apocalyptic dreams that are beginning to affect his ability to do his job. Seemingly concerned with the President's well being, Bob Blair (Plummer), government head of Dr. Novotny's project and shadowy leader of an intelligence group even the CIA fears requests Dr. Novotny assist in relieving the President of these nightmares, but we soon learn he has other plans, plans of a sinister nature involving another, less stable psychic within the project by the name of Tommy Ray Glatman (David Patrick Kelly). Can Alex uncover the plot, help the President, and stay alive? Possibly, but the odds are certainly against him...
Given some of the films that came out in 1984 like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Ghostbusters, Amadeus, Footloose, Romancing the Stone, Starman, A Passage to India, and The Killing Fields, it's no surprise this `sleeper' got lost in the shuffle. I've always enjoyed it, and thought it deserved a bit more credit than it's gotten. Dennis Quaid is really good and charming as hell as the smart alecky Alex Gardner, a character who seems to be able to handle himself, yet exhibits a smidgen of naiveté which possibly stems from a core belief of decency, despite his ventures into gray areas, specifically using his skills to determine winners of horse races, earning him money to live. Max Von Sydow is also very good, although I feel as if I've seen him in similar roles so many times before, as a doctor involved in ground-breaking research, not being able to see the forces which conspire to use his research for their own, sinister means until it's too late. As far as Kate Capshaw, I have to admit I've never cared for her all that much as I found her character in Temple of Doom to be highly annoying and distracting. She's not bad here, even though she does suffer from a common malady of the 80's here in big-hairitis syndrome. Plummer is good as the conniving powerful government agent with a secret agenda, although I've seen this whole `evil government stealing research meant for the good of mankind for it's own corrupted means' theme about a thousand times before. Even so, he's perfectly suited for the part, oozing a smarmy, almost quiet charm that hides disturbing ulterior motives...I did like the aspect that his goals were driven mostly by his desire to protect what he thought needed protecting, even if he was misguided by his own sense of twisted patriotism.
The special effects, while seeming quite dated now, were actually very good for the time this film came out, especially the dream sequences of the President detailing post-apocalyptic visions of decimated cities and ruinous wastes. The stop motion work, while not really appreciated by many, is really pretty good and reminds me of those old Ray Harryhausen films I love so much. One thing that annoyed me the most about this release is what's missing due to a hack editing job on a few scenes, all within dream sequences, I suppose, to more aptly fit the movie's PG-13 rating. One scene involved Quaid and Capshaw and a romantic interlude on a train with some pretty steamy stuff, but here it's cut short, removing the nudity. A second edited scene had Quaid inside a mousy man's dream about his wife, which contained some nudity that was excised out of here, and finally another scene has to do with Quaid's character helping a little boy overcome a terrifying reoccurring nightmare about a monstrous snake man. The part removed had a bit of gore in it, but it certainly wasn't anything, in my opinion, that deserved to be removed.
It says the movie is available in full and widescreen anamorphic formats, but I only saw the widescreen format. The picture quality is pretty good, but the transfer print does suffer very minor age deterioration at some points, but it's hardly noticeable. The audio is much better, with Dolby Digital 2.0, new Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 Audio available. Special features include an audio commentary track by producer Bruce Cohn Curtis, writer David Loughery, and special effects artist Craig Reardon that's pretty good, although dry at more than a few points. Also included are a behind the scenes special effects makeup test reel and a slide show. I really wanted to give this four stars, but given that's it missing parts from a few scenes, I have to go with three...

Law & Order (1953) Review

Law and Order (1953)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Law and Order is a solid, entertaining western that showcases Ronald Reagan as a leading man. Reagan gives an almost John Wayne-esque performance (you could almost call him John Wayne Light in this one). Reagan is tough, but very likeable in the role and shows the charisma that would help him in his political life just a decade later.
The story itself is something of a re-working of the Earps VS the Clantons, and it even starts in Tombstone. Reagan is Frame Johnson, tough, no-nonsense Marshall of Tombstone. He decides to retire to a nearby town to start a ranch and marry his girl, but he finds the town run by another rancher and soon Frame and his brothers are in conflict with that rancher and his family. There is plenty of good western action, and a solid story in Law and Order.
Law and Order is well worth buying for Western fans or fans of Ronald Reagan.

Illicit Affairs Review

Illicit Affairs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Illicit Affairs" is a two-disc, four-movie set, supposedly a collection of low-budget movies that are erotic in nature. Overall they all are extremely low budget in quality, style and content; hence one movie was fair (by erotic thriller standards); one was bad; and two were so awful I spent most of the time fast-forwarding through the films, nudity, violence and all. My synopsis of each film is as follows:
Obsessive Affairs: A dreadful story of a recently paroled prostitute and drug addict who struggles to remain on the straight path. The movie had only three characters in it (a fourth had a total of 15 minutes screen time). The movie has the worst production value where no effort was put in writing, scenery, set development, and especially acting. There was awful dialog between the main character (prostitute), her analyst, and her former (and current) pimp. The story was ridiculously predictable, and the erotic elements was a virtual snoozefest. The sex scenes were slow and ridiculous, with the main character only exhibiting partial nudity and the men none. Overall it was the worst erotic thriller I've ever seen.
Savage Vows: A standard horror-slasher film with a 1970's feel to it, though not in charm and nostalgia, but in overblown camp and cheap feel. The story is about six people who are in a cabin in the woods, and are killed in horrific manner (sounds familiar?). Only the special effects are so cheap there was nothing horrifying about the violence. I can't understand why this movie was added in this collection in the first place, given there was virtually no erotic elements. There is no doubt that clever high school students can make a better film than this one.
Revenge of the Wives: This was bad, but an improvement over the first two films. Three women whose cop husbands were killed are recruited to work for the police (as a drug dealer, a mobster's girlfriend, and a prostitute) to help bring their husband's killer, a big-time mobster, to justice. What?? What police department would ever have three housewives infiltrate a ruthless criminal operation in order to bring down a criminal enterprise? The premise is completely ludicrous, but at least this film makes an ATTEMPT at some originality. That said, the acting was bad, the effects cheap, and it looks like it was filmed in a vacant office and someone's small colonial home. There was attempt at eroticism (especially a humorous, yet unremarkable S&M scene), but no nudity. This was a bad film, but better than the first two.
Sunset After Dark: Unquestionably the best of the lot. It's your standard erotic thriller with a SkineMax of the late 1990's feel. A young, broke screenwriter moves into an apartment building with a collection of strange, quirky (and at times dangerous) tenants, including a sexy femme fatale portrayed by the young and very sexy Monique Parent (aka Scarlett Johansing). Anyone who is an aficionado of erotic thrillers and dramas is well aware of Ms. Parent's "body" of work. The police believes her character instrumented the death(s) of her husband and lover, but have no proof. Naturally the writer is taken by her sultry advances. I think you can guess where this is going. That said, compared to the first three films, this one is like an Oscar winner by comparison. There are two VERY hot sex scenes Ms. Parent has, which that alone makes this cliched story worth watching. While this was not the best erotic thriller ever made, it was okay, and after watching the first three films, this was a treat to sit through.
I hate to say this set is certainly not worth spending your good money on, given three of the four films are totally unwatchable. Even with "Sunset After Dark" being a good erotic thriller, I'd say you'd have to be the hardest hardcore fan of Ms. Parent to justify spending money on this set.

Rare Birds (2001) Review

Rare Birds (2001)
Average Reviews:

I say this is really funny and it was to me. I saw this in an arthouse theater in SLO and laughed my head off, unfortunately more than half the audience did not. Many were not amused. Whats happening out there? This movie has the most audacious characters. Especially Phonce, Andy Jones, who is so believable in his role. Actually all the actors were excellent! Probably some of the best acting I've seen for awhile. The story weaves around the beautiful coast of NewFoundLand and William Hurt's characters restaurant, The Auk. Hurt is a great cook but his place is located in some remote seaside area, which causes a lack of customers. Anyways, Phonce, who is always the creative planner, the leader in the twosome, comes up with some zany ideas to bring fortune to Hurts character and also to himself. The scenes involving the mini submarine are some of the funniest I've seen in awhile. Like I said though, many in the theater were not even cracking a smile, this is an offbeat comedy so may appeal to some and not to others. Unique and different, these characters are the real rare birds in this cool little film. Also the actress, I think Molly Parker?? does another great job in getting her role to shine, even without alot of film time, well done!
