(More customer reviews)I have used the Handirack to carry kayaks up to 19-feet long over long distances at interstate highway speeds safely and without incident--provided that they are otherwise secured by nylon rope fore and aft to appropriate metal loops under the car. I find the rack very useful and convenient, once inflated. (After that, I would store it in its inflated state, since blowing it up with the pump is a bit of a pain.)
Nonetheless, since the straps come through the car between the doors and the door jambs (thereby bending the rubber weather-stripping around the door), water WILL leak in (at four different places) and run along the entire length of the straps inside the car, then dripping, slowly but surely soaking everything along both front and back seats. This might be tolerable on a given trip (and it might not), but one is definitely advised to remove the rack immediately after removing the boat(s), since water will continue to come into the car if it rains while the car is parked outside with the rack on it. This problem can be pretty bad, since the water will thoroughly soak the car seats as well as passengers and anything else on the seats.
Frankly, as useful as this rack can be in an emergency, if one intends to carry boats on a regular basis, one might as well spring for the more substantial metal racks which do not attach through the inside of the car--and which thereby avoid the problem of water inside the car.
One last point is that it is not all that easy to inflate the racks, since one must pinch the valves on the rack sections before air can come into the inflatable part of the rack from the pump. For persons with three hands, this is not going to be a problem. All others are advised to seek an extra hand.
