South of St Louis Review

Joel McCrea, Zachary Scott, and Douglas Kennedy star as friends and partners whose ranch is destroyed as the Civil War rages on. Needing money to restart, they end up running guns for the Confederate Army, leaving McCrea's girlfriend Dorothy Malone behind and tangling with saloon singer/businesswoman Alexis Smith. However, each man wants something different, putting the former friends at odds with each other. South Of St. Louis is a passable film, neither exciting enough to be memorable, nor dull enough to be given a bad rating. The actors are competent in poorly drawn characters, the script average, the direction acceptable. Alexis Smith's saloon singer appears to have some spark to her in the beginning, but she quickly fades. The film needs some spark to get it going and to make the audience care. It's an average movie, nothing more, nothing less.

Where Were You When Lights Went Out (1968) Review

It's November 9th,1965 and New York is having one of its largest power failures. Well, anyone who has ever been in a blackout knows the stress and confusion it can cause. Doris Day plays Margaret Garrisson, an actress with the reputation of being a good girl. Her husband, Peter Garrison (played by Patrick O'Neal), is disappointed that this reputation is starting to become a reality in their marriage. When Margaret comes home after her Broadway show has been canceled due to the power outage, she is shocked by what she finds: her husband and a reporter she had entrusted him with, in a romantic candle-lit state. Margaret storms off into the pitch black night and manages to make it to their second home where she drinks quite a bit of sleeping aid and passes out. When Margaret awakes, she is greeted by a man she has never seen before, and whom she may have had some illicit affair with. That doesn't sound like a good girl to me. And boy, what a mess this causes! Her husband is outraged to find his wife with another man (Now if that isn't the kettle calling the teapot black!); her agent (played by Terry Thomas) fears that Margaret may be thinking of quitting her acting career; and poor Mr.Walichek, how will he get paid? And what about the briefcase filled with several million dollars? It's a big ball of confusion and straightening this mess out is not going to be easy. Robert Morse plays Waldo Zane (you'll remember him as the wacky advisor in "Guide For The Married Man"), and he adds quite a bit more wackiness this time around. So next time you find yourself home alone on a rainy night with nothing to do, rent this one and be thankful that at least the power is still working.

Malone Review

Why don't they make movies like this anymore!!! This explosive action film starring the incomperable BURT REYNOLDS will make you laugh, cry, fall in love (with Burt) then crap your pants with the absolute fantabulousness of it all. (Yes I made up the word fantabuluos just to describe this movie, because there were no words in the dictionary that could possibly do it justice.) Reynolds, in all of his action starrin', tight pants wearin', gun slingin', lady killin' glory is a CIA agent who is unhappy with his job, so he leaves, and ends up in a small Eastern Oregon town where trouble is afoot. And when Burt Reynolds is around trouble you know he can't stay out of it. Taking us from the beauty of Eastern Oregon to a breath-taking scene in Los Angeles (Very important scene!!!), this movie is like a roller coaster that is going a million miles an hour, derails, lands on another track, then the other roller coaster is coming right at it and they crash and then a barn full of maniacal patroit propaganda explodes. Then from the ashes arises Burt, with the cold, cutting eyes that warn all other maniacal patriot propagandists "Beware, Malone is coming for you!!!" Often overlooked with all the action is the beautiful love between Malone and the girl at the gas station, and then his passionate love of his old partner. At times heart warmingly beautiful at others heart racingly explosive, this movie has it all.
