This outstanding series gives PBS's "American Family" a run for its money as the finest series about a typical, all-American family. Superbly acted across the board, from proud, tough-love Patriarch Roberto (the excellent Tony Plana), struggling sister-in-law Bibi (Elizabeth Pena - why isn't this woman a star?) and her loving son Tommy (the underrated Douglas Spain) to always-reliable veterans Rita Moreno and Glynn Turman... this series strikes gold on all counts, from the fine acting and directing to the smart scripts and warm designs. Let's hope Paramount resurrects seasons two and three on DVD in the not-too-distant-future. It's impossible not to fall in love with these characters. Bravo!

A struggling taxi company has struggling taxi drivers with heavy emotional issues, add to this a serial killer who is after the taxi drivers and apparently enjoys killing them at night for sport, and what do you have? An instant movie classic? Perhaps not. But with good acting by Glover, Grier, and Rodriguez, you end up with a fine movie. This movie shows a colorful but desperate world of the working class in a big city. There is everything here: love, childhood trauma, fear of commitment, prostitution, and, of course, murder. There are even stories of Bosnian genocide!
We are introduced to a cab driver from Bosnia who is not only one of the worst natural drivers in the world, but also incredibly distracted. This means that every day he has an accident. He is so accident prone that he ends up having to leave the country and his love (who prostitutes herself at a bathhouse) and go back to Bosnia.
Not to be outdone, Glover's and Rodriguez's characters resort to extreme violence when they feel physically or emotionally pushed. The movie is original, and its host of ethnic characters makes it fun and colorful. The ending is also not your typical happy ending. It is not that unhappy. It is just not typical. I recommend the movie.

The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973) Review

The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973)

If you like a well-done Western, you'll enjoy this one. It has everything - train robberies, shoot outs, Outlaws, Indians, bad guys, heroes, strong women and strong men, romance and a touch of humor. It's too bad Burt Reynolds didn't choose more movies roles like this. He plays the part very well and Sara Miles is enchanting as the strong-willed Catherine. And what Western would be complete without Lee J. Cobb and Jack Warden? Look for an amazingly well done performance by (of all people) George Hamilton.
Now - I only wish Warner would put it out on DVD!

Pride & Prejudice (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (2005) Review

Pride and Prejudice (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (2005)

Okay, I am a rabid Frith and BBC fan of the miniseries, but I was very impressed with this adaption and found it refershing in it's grounded, youthful take on the story.
For starters, there is a very grounded nature to the presentation of the story. Some Austenites got their knickers into a twist because they thought it made the family and their circumstances too drab looking. But I loved it! The Meryton Assembly basically sets the stage for this grounded approach-the dancing looks a little heavy footed, the girls look sweaty, and you can't help but think that someone needs to open a window cause it looks awfully sweaty! But at the same time,it made the story come alive, like you were a fly on the wall, peeking in on Lizzy and Darcy and the rest of the gang.
Lastly, I loved the youthful take on the story. I LOVE Firth and Ehle as the '95 leads. They had this chemistry and sensual tension that was electric! But their take was definitely from a mature standpoint-like the way I'd act now as a 33 year old woman. Whereas Macfadyen and Knightley? Theirs is a more youthful, innocent, first love take that I just took to. Great chemistry, Lizzy's a little less cocksure, Darcy's a bit more unbalanced by this attraction, and it felt right in terms of age and stage of development with the actual characters in the book.
Great adaption, brisk storytelling, and a wonderfully irreverent tone by a fun director who knew it was a good idea to knock the pedestal off from under our Lizzy and Darcy, and let them be seen in a more grounded light. And ps-I thought Macfadyen, even though he doesn't have that big of a part, was a great Darcy!

Out of Sight (Collector's Edition) (1998) Review

Out of Sight (Collector's Edition) (1998)

George Clooney stars with Jennifer Lopez in this excellent and entertaining romantic heist movie, unfortunately much overlooked and poorly promoted on its theatrical release. Based on the novel by Elmore Leonard and superbly and subtly directed by Steven Soderbergh. George Clooney (as bank robber Jack Foley) and Jennifer Lopez (as Federal Marshall Karen Sisco) light up the screen with previously unparalleled sexual chemistry in the movie that finally launched their big screen careers to the A list, after previous false starts (such as The Peacemaker and The Money Train respectively). Also boasting a very impressive supporting cast that includes Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Steve Zahn, Albert Brooks, Dennis Farina (as Jennifer Lopez father) and great cameos from Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson, movies really don't get much better than this.
Principally this is the story of serial bank robber Jack Foley and Federal Marshall Karen Sisco, on opposite sides of the law but inescapably attracted to each other. When Jack escapes from prison aided by his friend Buddy (Rhames) he ends up in the trunk of a car with the kidnapped Karen Sisco (Lopez) after she nearly foils the prison break. However, thanks to their inept friend Glenn Michaels (Zahn), Karen escapes and Jack and Buddy have to go on the run. Meanwhile, Karen Sisco is hot on Jack's trail in more ways than one in this brilliantly played, beautifully written, excellently directed movie. This has everything I love about movies, a great story, great cast and great style. Truly unmissable and well worthy of five stars.

Evil in the Bayou (2005) Review

Evil in the Bayou (2005)
Average Reviews:

This flick centers around a PI just recently booted from the New Orleans police dept. who's trying to avoid being a sacrifice between rival satanic & voodoo cults in a small Louisiana town.
Jake LeClaire (Paul Zanone) has been hired by Ryan Mason (Mark Shady) to find his missing wife in said town. He meets up with a female satanic worshiper called Devon (Stephanie Beaton), who's a beautiful red-head. They fall in love at first & have a steamy sex scene together not on the bed, but standing up against a wall. All is normal until he looks down to see a demonic looking hand, which spooks him greatly, after being asked by Devon what's wrong, he says he's okay, & they resume the sex, but their relationship is strained a bit.
Detective Dirk Osbourne (Jon Emm) is the local big cop here & starts to provide some info to Jake about Mrs. Mason being killed by a satanic cult & given to Satan as a gift. He then gets more wary of Devon, finds out what is going on with their cult meetings, & also runs into a voodoo cult a few days later.
The ending is a bit weak, but still quite entertaining, Jake lets himself get captured by Devon but before she can sacrifice him, he breaks free, escapes the coven, gets his gun, & kills her, but not without being injured a bit.
The acting is good, as are the camerawork, & special effects. It's really quite well-done for a direct-to-video flick. The music is basic, but is pretty good, the plot varies from good to weak, esp. in the 2nd half of the movie. Though it's only 90 minutes long, it drags a bit in the 2nd half.

Jail Bait / Glen or Glenda (1954) Review

Jail Bait / Glen or Glenda (1954)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
JAIL BAIT (1954) is inept filmmaking of little value. The other half of this double feature is a classic by comparison.GLEN OR GLENDA (1953) - Bela Lugosi, Edward Wood Jr., Dolores Fuller, Lyle Talbot, 'Tommy' Haynes, Conrad Brooks
Infamous movie that began Ed Wood's reign as "worst director of all time" is an autobiographic semi-documentary on transvestism (now called "crossdressing"). Wood as Glen also boldly appears in his second self, here named Glenda. Fuller, playing girlfriend Barbara, is a really bad actress. Bela's "puppy dog's tails" speech and later "Pull da string! Pull da string!" narration over a superimposed buffalo herd are unforgettable. An extended sequence of wordless action with music track perhaps reveals the director's other idiosyncracies.
Here, as Glen and Barbara get married, a sports jacketed Satan nods his approval. The next curious segment is of an hourglass shaped stripper then a supine woman being whipped and bound by another girl. The previously tied up girl freely writhes on a couch in a sheer negligee, clearly aroused. A man enters and forces himself upon her; at first she resists but then kisses him back. All this as Lugosi watches with raised brows.
The sequence continues: a small crowd points accusingly at Glen and surround him as the devil urges them forward. He's now Glenda when they back away. Barbara slowly approaches but suddenly turns into Satan. Glenda recoils. An amused Barbara reappears in an overturned chair; she rises and mocks Glenda. A montage of laughers, plus their hands and grinning faces, segues to the devil repeating Lugosi's "Beware" soliloquy.
All this is preface to Glen's decision to reveal his dark secret to Barbara. Will she laugh for real and make Glen's nightmare a reality? Will she end their engagement? Before we find out, another case is presented plus there's lots more stock footage to use up! (Hint: Wood's story incorrectly concludes that love cures CDers.)
