They are easy to use and very secure under normal circumstances.
I've had these Malone straps for 2 or 3 years and 2 of them broke (the straps, not the buckles) within about 2 hours traveling during a recent canoeing trip.
I bought replacements at a local paddling shop and they have much heavier straps which I expect to last much longer.
